Lesson Plan #1 Students should always have an opportunity to showcase their knowledge through projects and other assignments. Students who work out their own ideas and create their own projects are using higher level thinking skills. The following project based learning plan allows students to practice with learning more about Hispanic culture, but also other allows them to learn more about other classes. Grade Level – 9th and 10th grade Subject Area- Spanish I (beginning level language learners) Standards and Outcomes- National Foreign Language Standards -
more comfortable with other disciplines throughout the project. Short description of lesson- Students will be given an assignment that has them research products from different Hispanic cultures. Students will find a product and will learn about it and how to grow it. They will begin to grow it in the Green House at our school. As the product grows students will find a recipe which they will create and translate into the target language.Students will be required to learn the necessary vocabulary needed for the translation. A list of words will be given to students to assist them as they create their final project. Once the product and recipes are completed students will try to sell the products in a “bake sale” to try and raise money to complete more hands on and learning based projects like this one. Steps for the project- Students will choose a product and country from the list passed out.
Students will go to the library and research the product and how it should be grown and why it is important to the country.
Students will then plant the product in the green house (Day 3)
Students will begin working on finding a recipe that requires their product.(day 4)
Students work on translating and typing up their recipes. (weeks 1-5) This is a homework assignment.
Students will work daily on checking their product and its growth. They will also work on creating their final write up. Students will be required to post on their blog once a week as a homework assignment recording their products growth and questions that may come up as the weeks go on. The first couple of days students will work in class and then will be on their own to create their products. Once the products are grown students will have time to put together their recipes in during class time. This is a process that will take time and students will be required to maintain their products and continue working on their write ups and blog entries. Technology Usage- Students will use word processor to type up their final write up. They will also use an online blog as a journal to update their progress on their project. They will also post questions or concerns that they may have about their projects as they move through the process. Diverse Learners- Students who may need additional resources and time will be given the time needed. I will also check in with them more often to make sure they are on the right track. Time will be given to students for conferencing and additional help after school. This time will be for students who may want or need help with their write up. For those students who work well with this project and may finish early and opportunity to help put together a class recipe book will be offered. Assessment- Students will be accessed based on their research and their final write up on their project. How well did they use the vocabulary and resources? They will also be assessed on how well they can follow the directions of their recipe.
Lesson Plan #2
Grade Level – 9th and 10th grade Subject Area- Spanish I (beginning level language learners) Standards and Outcomes-National Foreign Language Standards - Students will become more aware of the Hispanic culture and products that are used and produced in different countries. Students will have an understanding of the use of different technology pieces involved in the project and the benefits they have on the learning process. Short description of the lesson- Throughout this lesson, students will create a type of online. Students will create a blog or wiki that they will post to weekly. Mini lessons will be taught on each tool. Once students have experienced with each tool they will make the decision on which one they would like to work with and begin creating their initial post. They will then be asked to post weekly on the progress of their project. They will also be asked to look at their classmates’ posts and offer suggestions and help if they think they may be able to help them with any of their questions. Steps of the Project- Class will go to the computer lab and learn about the blogs and wikis once the project has been started.
Students will decide if they would like to work independently and create a blog or in a group and create a wiki.
Students will create their site and create their first post on their experience thus far in the project.
Students will continue to post weekly to their site about their progress and questions they come across throughout the project.
Students will help their classmates by offering suggestions, help, answering of questions and just reassurance weekly.
Students will be expected to work on their site weekly and to fellow classmates. Technology Usage- This whole part of the project will be using technology. Students will learn new skills and will be able to have support of their classmates and myself throughout the project. Diverse Learners- Students who may need additional resources and time will be given the time needed. I will also check in with them more often to make sure they are on the right track. I will also help them with their initial setup and post. I will also offer times after school for students who may want more guidance and support while creating their posts. Assessment- Students will be graded weekly on their post. It will be counted as a homework grade. It will also be added into their final project assessment.
Lesson Plan #3
As students prepare to finish up their problem-based learning activity they will need to complete a write up and blog entry on their experience. There are many ways in which students can complete a write up or summarize a project. One way is by creating a summary using digital storytelling. The following lesson plan will be a way that students can sum up, present and share their experience on the project through digital storytelling. Grade Level – 9th and 10th grade Subject Area- Spanish I (beginning level language learners) Standards and Outcomes-National Foreign Language Standards - Students will become more aware of how to create a digital story. They will use this skill to share the information they have learned with an audience. Short description of the lesson- Throughout this problem-based activity, students have been sharing information and concerns through a class blog. In addition to the blog, students will be asked to share their experience at the end and find and create a meal or snack using the product they produced. In addition to producing the homemade snack, students will also create a digital story on how to make the recipe. They will use pictures and as much of the target language as possible to present the information. Steps of the Project- Students will finish growing their project. Students will decide on a recipe they would like to create using their product. Students will conduct a trial run making sure the recipe works out. Students will work on and complete a DS to show how to make the recipe. Technology Usage- This whole part of the project will be using technology. Students will create a video showing the directions on how to make a recipe. Diverse Learners- Students who may need additional resources and time will be given the time needed. Students will be able to decide how they want their video to be completed, whether with still photos or as a taped video. Students will be given time in class to work on the assignment and I will be available for extra help after school when and if students need it. Assessment- Students will be graded on their final project using DS. Students will not only be assessed by me, but they will also be assessed by their classmates.
